SANDRA MATENDA

Initiator of the organization “SANG TABOU

Focused on the personal experiences of the girl or woman affected by menstrual abnormalities. The aim of the NGO Sang Tabou is to create a platform for exchange where the affected person will feel safe to express herself on the trauma caused by these abnormalities, which not only destroy femininity, but also degrade the conditions or lifestyle of the affected person.
In addition to scientific testimonials, it’s important for the girl or woman to find herself through someone who has lived through the same experiences and fully understands the pain, worries and frustrations she’s facing. Indeed, the affected person has the impression that the organ that is supposed to enable her to give life is not cooperating. This is very frightening and leaves an ongoing trauma that needs to be expressed. The simple fact of being drenched by profusely flowing blood creates an unpleasant feeling of insecurity that causes these women to miss work, important events and appointments without any concrete explanation. Simply because menstruation is a taboo subject.

As for my experience,

the fibroids manifested themselves a few years ago with heavy bleeding lasting 8 to 10 days, with a lot of pain and considerable weight gain, especially in the abdomen. I discovered them during a pregnancy loss when I was looking for a maternity hospital. Unfortunately, when I saw the weight gain, people around me assumed that I was expecting a family, not knowing that in reality I was unable to conceive because of the fibroids. The proposed treatment was a 2 to 3-hour operation during which a dozen fibroids of various sizes were extracted. Some months after the operation, my daughter was conceived. It was at that moment, thinking of the girls in need, that I realized that menstrual health must be brought to the fore and no longer be a taboo, because it affects the whole family. We must all stand up to break the cycle.

Because girls' health is precious
