It’s true that in Congolese society, menstruation is often a taboo subject, difficult to discuss with family and friends.
As a result, Congolese girls remain silent and in blatant ignorance throughout their feminine development, no matter how much pain they endure during their menstrual periods, and unable to break this silence. The more she grows up in this ignorance and shame, the more certain diseases develop in her reproductive system and are capable of shattering her femininity.
So, since July 2022, the non-governmental organization “SANG TABOU Asbl”, with all its financial means at its disposal, has decided to take up the battle of awareness-raising campaigns for Congolese girls and women in order to break this guilty silence.
Sang Tabou began by organizing conferences, visiting orphanages to raise awareness among the young girls there, and taking charge of alarming cases identified during awareness-raising campaigns. Today, to extend this network, a first group of ambassadors was formed in March 2023, and a second wave of Sang Tabou ambassador training was necessary given the impact of previous mobilizations and the size of our target group.
To this end, the NGO Sang Tabou has set itself the task of training sang tabou ambassadors, whose mission will be to raise awareness of the existence of certain diseases that are often ignored, and whose intimate nature makes it difficult for people living with them to communicate.
To ensure the smooth running of this initiative, the NGO Sang Tabou selected 10 volunteers from a variety of backgrounds to reinforce their skills in Sang Tabou’s vision and values, as well as information on the symptoms of certain gynecological diseases and personal hygiene.
